KMnO4 modified biochar derived from swine manure for tetracycline removal

Abstract Tetracycline (TC) is widely used in the livestock industry, but undigested TC excreted with waste and accumulates environment. In this study, swine manure-derived biochar (SBC) was modified KMnO4 (MnOx-SBC), to remove TC. SEM-EDS, FTIR, XPS elemental analysis all indicated that ultrafine MnOx particles were attached surface. The surface properties composition of oxygen-containing functional groups enhanced by modification. Batch sorption experiments showed MnOx-SBC's TC-adsorption capacity 105.9 mg·g−1, 46.4% higher than SBC's. onto MnOx-SBC agreed well pseudo-second-order model Freundlich isotherm. A new platform proposed for reusing manure while solving industry's antibiotic pollution risk ‘treating waste’.
